 Senior Pastor
Born in Myers Mill, South Carolina, Dr. Johnny R. Hatney attended school at the local church until his family moved to Blackville, South Carolina. In 1949 at the Saint Luke Baptist Church, Dr. Hatney "came to know Jesus" and was baptized at ten years old. After moving to Augusta, Georgia in 1953, he attended Lucy C. Laney High School and graduated in 1957. Even then Dr. Hatney was a distinguished student and graduated with honors. He later served in the United States Armed Forces before marrying the former Joyce Elaine Wright. His marriage was blessed with the addition of two children - Byron(deceased) and Taura.

In 1979, he came to the realization that God was calling him into the ministry and he could no longer resist that calling.  November 1979, he spoke with his pastor, the Late Reverend J. S. Wright, and shared his feelings with him about his calling.  Rev. Hatney preached his trial sermon and was licensed on January 20, 1980, and ordained in August of the same year.  Truly, 1980, was a very good year for him because in December he was called to pastor Good Hope Baptist Church.

Dr. Hatney wanted to further his education and entered Paine College in 1984, earning his Bachelors of Art degree in Philosophy/Religion. Desiring to gain a greater knowledge of the Lord's words, Pastor Hatney attended the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA where he earned a Master of Divinity degree in May 1990. He continued his educational quest and earned a Doctorate in Ministry with high honors in May 1993.

Dr. Hatney saw a need in our community for leaders who loved God and are led by the Spirit of God. This belief motivated him to serve as a city councilman in Augusta, GA. He believes our actions must be guided by the deepest principles of the Christian faith.

The Good Hope family thank God for the blessings he has bestowed upon us. We are proud of our Pastor. We pray that God will continue to guide and strengthen Pastor Hatney as he leads the Lord's servants into the new millennium!
